Hyderabad FT Meetup #1

(Reported by Sarath Somina)
Date & Time: 22-September-2012, 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Venue: Lamakaan & GVK One Mall, Road no 1, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad

This meeting was conducted to discuss the agenda for the coming meetup scheduled on 7-Oct. 4 members (Ikram, Nayeem, Sarath and Varun) showed up to the discussion and we sat down in the outdoor section of Lamakaan. Since most of all met for the first time, we had introductions, and proceeded to discuss the agenda and other high-level details of the Hyderabad FT group

As unpredictable as Lamakaan is, everyone was asked to leave as there's some rock concert scheduled an hour later. So we went around and sat down in an eating joint in GVK One Mall. Lots of diversified ideas were proposed on the philosophy of the group, how to conduct meetups, general agenda need to be followed in the meetups, the scope of the group , and possible challenges to raise it to a global level

After good amount of brainstorming, we all agreed on the following norms to be maintained in the group
  • We would have English as the language of communication. We didn't want to confine ourselves to regional levels and there are lots of rationalist organizations working effectively at deep rooted levels in various regions
  • Though the group is open for all age-groups in general, we would focus on young people in particular, making the group a platform for discussion, debate, secular thought and values, helping them in traveling towards the rational side of life
  • We would work with fellow Rationalist and Secular Humanist bodies in improving the group and raising the bar to a global level
  • We would work tirelessly to get the group registered and make a bigger impact
  • We would make it a point to screen documentaries and discuss them in the meetups, to showcase the group as a platform for debate
  • We would try to rope-in one senior and popular Rationalist at least for our meetups
Overall, it was a nice discussion, given most of us are first-timers in the group, and we all got motivated to pursue this journey to maintain the group and improve it. We would be meeting again on 7-Oct with the full-pledged objectives and agenda
